Today is the start of Passover which is the major Jewish spring holiday which celebrates the liberation of the Israelites from being held in Egyptian slavery, this holiday is said by some to be eight days long with the first two and final two days celebrated as yom tov, In Israel. However, the holiday is observed for only 7 days, which is how it is actually outlined in the Bible. Passover is discussed in a few of the Hebrew Bible’s books including Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and more.
The history of Passover - Moses had asked the Pharaoh, an Egyptian ruler, to free his people, but the Pharaoh had completely refused to do so. God then sent ten plagues to punish the Egyptians as well as to convince the pharaoh to release the Israelites. The final plague was that of the death of the firstborn, However, God spared the Israelites when he “passed over” their homes. The Israelites at this point then left Egypt with Moses.
The first day of Passover (today) is set with a very peaceful, commemorative and intimate meal called the seder meal. The seder is a ritual that takes place around the dinner table where all of the people take time to worship, sing, pray and eat.
There is a book people can use which is called the Haggadah, which actually explains all of the foods eaten at this meal and their significance and the commemoration of the liberation of the Israelites.
Now since today marks the first day, what is eaten at the Seder meal?
-----------------------------------------------------
Four cups of grape juice or wine, vegetable, egg, horseradish, shank bone (lamb), charoset and bitter herbs.
The definition of the word "Seder" according to the dictionary is as follows:
"Seder is a word that can have different meanings depending on the context. It can refer to a Jewish home or community service and dinner that commemorates the exodus from Egypt and is held on the first or first and second evenings of the Passover. The word seder comes from a Hebrew word that means "order" or "procedure."
My kingdom family was able to gather yesterday evening and celebrate the Seder meal a day early! Being able to take part in something so beautiful and meaningful, truly allows you to get in touch with Holy Spirit and praise the Lord. It was such a great time to be able to be surrounded by family, friends and people I had just met, all with the desire to live and lead a life for Jesus!
